Quanda a leitura dos índices de poluição chega ao valor 200, o ar é considerado "muito pouco saudável". Acima de 300 é "perigoso" , lê-se no site da Agência Nacional do Ambiente de Singapura. Atualmente, os valores situam-se nos 371, ultrapassando assim os 226 recorde em 1997.

A nuvem de poluição deve-se aos incêndios florestais que estão a consumir a Ilha de Sumatra, na Indonésia.

O primeiro-ministro do pequeno estado asiático, Lee Hsien Loong, já alertou que "a neblina pode facilmente durar várias semanas e, possivelmente, até a estação seca terminar". Em conferência de imprensa, pediu aos residentes que se mantenham dentro de casa e evitem atividades ao ar livre.

A má qualidade do ar já originou uma corrida às máscaras descartáveis, deixando as lojas sem stock.
