Tropas especiais quenianas continuavam a combater, esta manhã, "um ou dois" atacantes islâmicos barricados no interior do centro comercial "Westgate", em Nairobi, indicaram fontes da segurança envolvidas na operação à agência AFP.

De acordo com as mesmas fontes, os atacantes foram localizados e isolados dentro ou em torno do casino, localizado num dos pisos superiores do centro comercial da capital queniana.

Disparos esporádicos e explosões podiam ser ouvidos a partir do interior do "Westgate" durante esta madrugada, de acordo com testemunhas.

Norte-americanos entre os autores

A ministra dos Negócios Estrangeiros do Quénia, Amina Mohamed, afirmou que havia "dois ou três" norte-americanos entre os autores do ataque a um centro comercial, este fim de semana, em Nairobi, do qual resultaram 62 mortos.

Durante o programa informativo "Newshour", da cadeia PBS, a chefe da diplomacia queniana explicou que os norte-americanos envolvidos tinham entre 18 e 19 anos, eram de origem somali e árabe, sendo que um deles é proveniente do estado do Minnesota.

A ministra dos Negócios Estrangeiros queniana também confirmou o envolvimento de uma mulher britânica que, segundo as informações de que dispõe, já teria participado noutros atentados terroristas.

Obama promete ajudar

O Presidente dos EUA, Barack Obama, qualificou hoje de "terrível tragédia" o mortífero ataque num centro comercial de Nairobi, e prometeu "todo o apoio necessário" ao Quénia.

O pai de Obama era queniano, mas o líder norte-americano tem mantido distanciamento face ao regime do Presidente Uhuru Kenyatta, considerado pelo Tribunal Penal Internacional como suspeito de incentivar à violência durante o período eleitoral.

"Quero exprimir pessoalmente as minhas condolências ao Presidente (Uhuru) Kenyatta que perdeu membros da sua família no ataque, mas também aos quenianos, estamos solidários", afirmou Obama antes do encontro em Nova Iorque com o seu homólogo nigeriano, Goodluck Jonathan.
