O primeiro estudo em profundidade sobre as mortes por fome na Somália foi divulgado quinta-feira e confirma, em números, um cenário trágico: 133 mil crianças, com menos de cinco anos, morreram em 2011. Em algumas comunidades, a taxa de mortalidade infantil é perto de 20%, ou seja, um quinto das crianças morre de fome.Dados que fazem da Somália o sítio mais perigoso do mundo para se ser criança.

No total dos países industrializados, as mortes de crianças com menos de cinco anos no mesmo período foi de 65 mil.

"O mundo foi demasiado lento a responder aos avisos da seca, exacerbada pelo conflito na Somália e o povo pagou com as suas vidas. Estas mortes podiam e deviam ter sido evitadas", lamenta Senait Gebregziabher, diretor da organização Oxfam, que presta auxílio na Somália.

O novo estudo aponta para um total de 260 mil mortes por fome.
