Bento XVI anunciou esta segunda-feira a resignação a partir dia 28 de fevereiro num discurso em latim durante um consistório no Vaticano, disse o porta-voz da Santa Sé, citado pela France Presse.

"O Papa anunciou que vai renunciar ao seu magistério às 20h00 locais (19h00 horas em Lisboa) do dia 28 de fevereiro. Nessa altura vai começar o período de escolha ("sede vacante"), precisou o padre Frederico Lombardi, num anúncio sem precedentes na História da Igreja Católica.

Sublinhando que liderar mais de mil milhões de católicos em todo o mundo implica "tanto força de mente como de corpo", Bento XVI declara-se sem "força" para o exercício adequado das suas funções".

"Depois de examinar repetidamente a minha consciência diante de Deus, tenho a certeza que as minhas forças já não são adequadas a um exercício adequado do ministério", afirma o Papa.

A decisão de Bento XVI força a realização de um conclave para eleger um novo Papa, o que, segundo a Associated Press, deverá ocorrer antes do final de Março.

O último papa a resignar foi Gregório XII, em 1415.
