O tribunal declarou que Breivik é mentalmente são e condenou-o a 21 anos de prisão, mas posteriormente a sua pena pode ser alargada por um prazo indeterminado, a cada cinco anos, caso seja considerado que é um perigo para a sociedade.

 

Foi no dia 22 de julho de 2011 que Anders Breivik estacionou um camião com quase uma tonelada de explosivos em Oslo, em frente a um edifício de 17 andares, onde fica o gabinete do primeiro-ministro (que, na altura, não se encontrava no local). Da explosão resultaram oito mortos.

Breivik deslocou-se em seguia à ilha de Utoya, onde decorria um encontro de jovens, e começou a disparar indiscriminadamente - morreram 69 pessoas, na sua maioria adolescentes.

Apesar de reconhecer a autoria dos atentados, Breivik declarou-se inocente, afirmando ter cometido os ataques para proteger o país da "invasão muçulmana".
