Milhares de japoneses saudaram nas ruas a eleição de Tóquio como sede dos Jogos Olímpicos de 2020, sucedendo ao Rio de Janeiro em 2016.

O "suspense" deu lugar à euforia dos corajosos que madrugaram (05:00) para ouvir o presidente do Comité Olímpico Internacional (COI), Jacques Rogge, anunciar a cidade vencedora, na 125.ª sessão do organismo, que decorre em Buenos Aires.

"Banzai! Banzai!", gritaram centenas de membros da candidatura nipónica, concentrados no auditório de Tosho, no coração de Tóquio, após uma longa espera.

Tóquio promete "Jogos soberbos"

O presidente da candidatura de Tóquio, que hoje foi eleita sede dos Jogos Olímpicos de 2010, Tsunekazu Takeda, agradeceu ao Comité Olímpico Internacional (COI) por ter compreendido de que o projeto "vai muito além do desporto".

"É uma grande honra ser a cidade anfitriã", disse, após o anúncio de vitória, garantindo, depois, que Tóquio "cumprirá todas as promessas feitas".

Emocionado, o dirigente foi assertivo: "Quero agradecer aos membros do COI e a toda a comunidade desportiva. Prometemos muitas coisas e vamos cumprir. Organizaremos uns Jogos soberbos".

O presidente do Comité Olímpico Internacional (COI), o belga Jacques Rogge, disse hoje Tóquio ganhou "de forma convincente" a corrida à organização dos Jogos de 2020, hoje decidida na 125.ª sessão do organismo.

"Temos confiança de que vão organizar uns Jogos excelentes", afirmou Rogge, que se vai despedir do cargo no final da sessão, que está a decorrer em Buenos Aires.

Para o dirigente, Tóquio "demonstrou que apoia o movimento olímpico", defendendo que "a base da sua proposta" e "a experiência de candidaturas anteriores" foram as justificações para a vitória.
