De acordo com o portal de informação sobre celebridades TMZ, Gandolfini  estava em Itália para participar num festival de cinema na Sicília.

James Gandolfini fez carreira no teatro e no cinema, destacando-se o seu papel na televisão como o chefe da máfia Tony Soprano, na série "Os Sopranos",  exibida no canal por cabo HBO entre 1999 e 2007, 

No cinema, destacam-se as suas participações em "True Romance"  (1993), Gandolfini participou em "She's So Lovely" (1997), "8MM" (1999),  "The Mexican" (2001), "The Man Who Wasn't There" (2001), "In the Loop" (2009)  e "Zero Dark Thirty" (2012).
